Najstariji glazbeni instrument je flauta. Stara je između 42 000 i 43 000 godina, a izradio ju je homo sapiens od ptičjih kostiju i mamutove bjelokosti. Instrumente su upotrebljavali za zabavu ili religijske rituale.
